Rhode Island Computer Museum: Social Media
The Client
The Rhode Island Computer Museum, located in Warwick, RI, was founded in 1996 by a group of individuals looking to procure and preserve computer science and its history and to inspire future generations about the origins of the computer. The Museum is unique in that it is an interactive learning experience which allows visitors to use the equipment that they have there.
The Challenge
The computer museum is host to a large variety of computer equipment that ranges from the early days of computing to modern VR. They offer a number of courses and workshops that educate people about the history of computers and also practical, modern day applications. They wanted to create social media content to try to attract a younger audience and also create awareness of all the programs that they offer.
The Solution
The first step in trying to solve this problem was to visit the computer museum in person and see what they had to offer. After replaying some childhood favorites, it was time to get some footage of what they have available. Once the contents of the museum were cataloged, the next steps involved communicating with the target audience, and finding out what attracted them to the museum. Fortunately, the museum has internship programs and I was given the opportunity to talk to them about their experiences. By learning about what interested them, not only at the museum itself, but also what they like to watch on social media, I was able to create an action plan to help draw traffic to the museum’s social media accounts.
The Result
The process involved combining the old and the new. I used images of the products available at RICM to create a film reel while incorporating modern motion graphics techniques that would grab the attention of a younger viewer. Here are the results:
